Ukrgasvydobuvannya JSC is starting to apply a new for Ukraine basin modeling and play-based exploration methodics. Based on the 4D dynamic play models analysis the company will predict risks, calculate project economics and make decisions on production plans, in particular on drilling new wells.
Ukrgasvydobuvannya plans to apply the basin analysis to assess the oil and gas potential of the Black Sea blocks, explore the Carpathian folded belt, and carry out further appraisal of the Dnipro-Donetsk Basin.
"Basin modeling is another step towards mitigating the risks, risks of drilling in the first place. Owing to this technology, we will be able to improve the accuracy of risk assessment both for individual prospects and for large geological structures in order to grow the resource base and enhance production of the Naftogaz," Alexander Romanyuk, Director of the Naftogaz Exploration and Production Division said.
Felipe Rodriguez headed a new basin analysis and modeling function at UkrNDIgaz, the Naftogaz Research and Development Division. He has 21 year experience in the oil and gas industry in the field of basin analysis and play-based exploration, has worked on the exploration and development of oil and gas deposits in Cuba, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Northern Brazil, Guyana, Angola, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, South Africa, Myanmar, Norway and Greenland, in particular for companies such as BP, Repsol and Cepsa.
For reference
Basin analysis and play-based exploration in sedimentary basins combines seismic, geological, geochemical, and stratigraphic information to dynamically model the evolution of the sedimentary basins. Integrated models are dynamic, which means that they provide a complete description and simulation of structural evolution, the history of temperature and pressure changes, which determines the generation, migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons over geological time from tens to hundreds millions years. Integrated dynamic 4D play models include all elements of geological risks and allow you to perform derisking of prospects for making investment decisions during the appraisal and exploration of new blocks.
The basin modeling technology is actively used by ExxonMobil, Shell, and BP – leading international petroleum companies - to predict and plan exploration and development processes.
Recall that in December 2020, the 3D Modeling and Field Visualization Center was opened in the UkrNDIgaz.
Moreover, the Naftogaz is also creating the largest geological data database in Ukraine.
