Ukrgasvydobuvannya to participate in two international studies on carbon dioxide storage

Ukrgasvydobuvannya received two grants for participation in international decarbonization projects. The projects focus on the research of opportunities for transportation and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2), including in the western and Black Sea regions of Ukraine, together with foreign partners.

"Within the framework of the energy transition Ukrgasvydobuvannya has established and develops the decarbonization direction, as well as the research and development of new and/or alternative types of energy. Participation in such projects will allow us enhancing our knowledge of the storage of CO2 and gaining new professional contacts, which could be in local projects in the future," Maksym Vityk, Director of Exploration and Development of Ukrgasvydobuvannya emphasized.

As part of the first project, Ukrgasvydobuvannya will join a consortium of 47 partners from various European countries, which will explore the options of creating geological CO2 storage facilities and carbon dioxide transportation in Europe. The consortium is led by the Norwegian SINTEF Scientific Centre. Ukrgasvydobuvannya will work within the Eastern European cluster together with MND Group (Czech Republic) and the Oil and Gas Institute (Poland), the Czech Geological Survey, and other companies in the industry. The project is designed for four years and will be financed by Horizon Europe Fund. A total grant budget exceeds 37 million euros.

In the second project, specialists of Ukrgasvydobuvannya together with partners from Romania, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, and other European countries will analyse the possibilities for CO2 transportation in the basins of the North, Baltic, and Black Seas, and the Atlantic coast of Europe. Within the scope of the project, testing of the innovative technology of carbon dioxide storage in offshore wells from specialized ships will be performed. The project will last during 2023-2025. Participation in the project was possible due to the partnership between Ukrgasvydobuvannya and the Norwegian NORCE Research Centre. Grant funds to ensure participation in the project will be allocated from the Special Fund of the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETPartnership).
