The deepest in Europe: Naftogaz uses artificial lift equipment to increase gas production

Naftogaz Exploration and Production continues to apply new technologies to increase gas production at brown fields. The program allowed to increase daily production of gas by 30% and condensate by more than 40% from well No. 8 of the Valyukhivske field (Poltava region).

This effect was achieved by means of equipment for extraction of fluids from the well. The operation was performed by installing a plunger lift at a depth of 5,148 m, which is the deepest mark in Europe*.

“The systematic deployment of global technologies and their implementation in Ukraine enables efficient removal of remaining hydrocarbon reserves from already depleted fields. These measures along with the modernization of ground infrastructure, increase in the efficiency of production from new wells and implementation of the stimulation program allow stabilizing the baseline production in the face of a significant natural decline,” said Oleksandr Romanyuk, Director of the Naftogaz Exploration and Production Division.

The presence of water and condensate during production significantly reduces the quantity and quality of gas. The plunger lift removes excess water, increases the production of gas and condensate remaining in the pay horizon, as well as extends the life of well.

Such equipment has been used by Naftogaz to stabilize production since 2017. In particular, the use of this technology at well No. 211 of the Opishnyanske field increased well productivity by 50%. These projects usually have a short payback period of 6 to 12 months.

Equipment installation works at well No. 8 of the Valyukhivske field and at the Opishnyanske field were carried out jointly with Weatherford Ukraine.

Plunger lift technology will be actively used in 2021. The use of this technology depends on the well condition determined by specialists.
