Extracting additional 67 million cubic meters of gas from the old challenging wells has become possible as a result of implementing the capillary string technology by Ukrgasvydobuvannya

In 2021, JSC Ukrgasvydobuvannya applied capillary string technology at 75 wells, which made it possible to intensify gas production from the challenging wells complicated by fluid loading.

Ukrgasvydobuvannya specialists started using capillary string technology only a year ago, and during this year alone they succeeded in increasing gas production from the old wells by 67 million cubic meters, having reduced the production and process losses at this.

"Taking into account current gas prices, it is especially important to increase domestic gas production. Capillary systems are the fast and cost-effective method of increasing the daily production from old wells. Taking into account the positive results of implementing this technology in the last year, we are planning to scale out the scope of its implementation. According to the preliminary plan for 2022, it is planned to increase the number of such operations to 232," Oleg Tolmachov, Naftogaz Group Exploration and Production Division Director, said.

The average payback period for installing the capillary string in a well is usually around one year, but there are examples when the payback period was less than a month; in particular, this was the case in the well No. 100 of Zakhidno-Solokhivske field in Poltava region. Thanks to using the capillary strings in the wells of the Bytkiv-Babchenske field in Ivano-Frankivsk region, their daily flow rate increased by more than 40%, or by 70 thousand cubic meters of gas.

Background:

Capillary string system is the technology that is used in wells drilled in fields with low formation pressure, where gas production process is complicated by the fluid accumulated in the well, causing drop of production, which sometimes even leads to complete well shut-down and the need for expensive workovers.

Capillary string systems ensures injection of surfactants to the bottomhole in order to create the foam, which is easier to lift to the surface than water. Using this technology makes it possible to stabilize the well performance and reduce production losses. Well monitoring and control is executed remotely.
